The American Optometric Association recommends for anyone diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus to have a comprehensive exam every year by a licensed eye care professional. This examination should include dilation of the pupils which allows a wider, more complete view of the retina (that part of the eye that is most susceptible to diabetic eye problems). When Diabetes is uncontrolled, exams may be warranted more often. Diabetic retinopathy is a serious sight-threatening complication of uncontrolled diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when tiny blood vessels in the eye leak blood and other fluids. This causes the retinal tissue to swell, resulting in cloudy or blurred vision and if left untreated will lead to blindness. The longer a person has diabetes, the more likely they will develop diabetic retinopathy. Early detection and treatment can limit the potential side effects of this devastating disease.
